The Faculty of Science and the Science Museum of the University of Navarra have among their objectives to bring the results and methods of research activity to society, especially to young people, encouraging curiosity, creativity, innovation, rigor, passion and commitment to science. With this purpose, we join the worldwide celebration of Science and Technology Week.

The Science Museum, with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) / Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, has been organizing this event uninterruptedly since 2007, seeking to bring society closer to the scientific profession, the value of science and the importance of society's participation in its development, with a full program of scientific activities for all audiences.

Experiments

texto-experimentos-introduccion

From November 10 to 14 we will perform scientific experiments on different topics to explain science concepts to students of ESO and Bachillerato. They will be from 10:00 to 12:00 hours in the Science Building of the University of Navarra. Previous registration by the teacher is required.

Aplicaciones anidadas

experimentos-1

Biology Table - Nora Escribano
"Methods and tools for the study of wildlife".
At the table we taught different sampling techniques of different animal groups (mammals, birds, insects), direct and indirect techniques and explained what studies can be performed with the information obtained.

experimentos-2

Minerals and Rocks Table - Ana Moreno
"From the Big Bang to the Bardenas Reales, in 10 minutes".
Observation of the rocks that form Navarra and the minerals that constitute them.

experimentos-3

Microbiology Table - David González
"The wonderful world of what we do not see".
We will show how we are surrounded by microorganisms, showing plates with cultures from different sites and also with a volunteer person from each group, we will do a swabbing of the mouth to see under the microscope the bacteria it has.

experimentos-4

Genetics Roundtable - Iñigo Izal
"Forensic Genetics: The incredible case of the murder that was solved with STR analysis techniques, which is not so incredible, but very cool".
The workshop will explain how techniques work to analyze DNA present in a sample obtained from a crime scene.

experimentos-5

Chemistry Table - Cristina Sola
"What is combustion?how does an extinguisher work?do colored fires exist?what is smoke?can we make colored smoke?"
We will see what is fire, how to extinguish it, special situations, we will study how to obtain colored fires and the importance of the particle size of the fuel.

experimentos-6

Physics Table - Luis Fernando Urrea
"From smoke signals to cell phones".
How we have communicated messages throughout history: smoke, lights and flags, Morse code, wired and wireless telephony, fiber optics... up to today's smartphone! With practical experiments to see the evolution live.

experimentos-7

Insect Table - Enrique Baquero
"Insect Secrets".
Curiosities about their anatomy, their biology and their relationship with humans. It will be possible to see at high magnifications using magnifying glasses or microscopes, and also their diversity thanks to the collections stored in the Science Museum.

Iñaki Echeverría - November 10th

"Artificial intelligence and its footprint in scientific research".
Artificial intelligence has gone from being a theoretical idea to an essential tool in scientific research. In this talk we will review its historical milestones, the advances that have allowed its recent expansion and some examples of its application in different disciplines. A journey to understand how AI is changing the way we generate knowledge.

conferencias-semana-2

Ana Patiño - November 11

"If we talk about genetics, we are all mutants".
Session on genetics in general, myths and legends, curiosities related to heredity in health and disease.

Raúl Bermejo - November 12

"Travelers of the Planet: discovering landscapes and environmental challenges."
Travelers of the Planet: discovering landscapes and environmental challenges: In this talk you will learn how students of the Environmental Sciences Degree at the University of Navarra travel to unique places such as Costa Rica, Ecuador, Wales or California. There they explore impressive ecosystems and face real environmental problems from biodiversity conservation to water management or social sustainability. An experience that connects science with the real world and trains the future guardians of the planet.

conferencias-semana-4

Elena Puerta - November 13

"This is how drugs get you: find out what's going on in your brain".
Addiction to drugs of abuse remains one of the world's most important social and health problems. In this session we will discover what happens in the brain when a potentially addictive substance is consumed so that it incites us to repeat this behavior. We will discuss what exactly is a drug of abuse and provide evidence-based data on the effects of drugs on humans.

Enrique Baquero - November 14

"Nature as an engineer: biomimetics".
Did you know that many of the best ideas in science and technology are born by copying nature? Biomimetics studies how animals, plants and ecosystems solve problems and inspires us to create amazing inventions: from faster trains thanks to the kingfisher's beak to ultra-resistant materials such as spider webs. In this talk you will discover how nature becomes the best teacher of innovation and how you too can be inspired by it to design the future.
