Music is one of the main protagonists of the San Fermin festival. From the morning dianas to the “Pobre de Mí” that brings the celebrations to a close, music accompanies the most important festive events and forms part of the collective memory of generations of people from Pamplona and visitors alike. Groups such as La Pamplonesa, the txistularis, the gaiteros, and the txarangas provide the soundtrack to a celebration that is not only heard, but also felt.

When we hear a familiar melody, sound reaches the ear and is transformed into signals that travel to the brain. There, regions such as the amygdala and the hippocampus connect music with emotions and memories. As a result, dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, is released. This is why songs such as the “Jota de San Fermín” or “Pobre de Mí” can evoke joy, emotion, or nostalgia almost instantly.
Music also produces physical responses. It can increase heart rate, accelerate breathing, or make us move our bodies in time with a melody. When thousands of people sing, dance, or clap together, collective synchronization phenomena occur, strengthening the sense of belonging and togetherness that is characteristic of the festival.
Traditional instruments also have their own scientific explanation. The sound of bagpipes, txistus, and drums is produced by vibrations that generate sound waves in the air. These waves bounce off streets and squares, creating acoustic effects that enhance the musical experience. Music during San Fermin is much more than entertainment: it is emotion, memory, the physics of sound, and a powerful form of human connection.
