The running of the bulls is much more than a race. Every morning, six fighting bulls and six steers cover the 848 meters that separate the Santo Domingo pens from the Bullring. During just a few minutes, animal biomechanics, the physics of motion, and the collective behavior of thousands of people all come into play. The bulls, which can weigh more than 600 kilograms, are capable of reaching speeds close to 25 kilometers per hour. For this reason, runners do not try to outrun them, but rather calculate the exact moment to run alongside the herd and move away safely.

The route presents very different characteristics depending on the section. The Santo Domingo slope is the fastest and most dangerous area, while the Mercaderes corner forces the animals to make a sharp change of direction. In other places, such as the passage leading into the Bullring, the space narrows, increasing the risk of falls and crowd build-ups. The physics of motion and urban design directly influence the herd's speed and behavior.

The interaction between runners and bulls also depends on the available space. As crowd density increases, runners accelerate to escape the animals, but have less room to take each stride. This combination increases the risk of trips and falls. To improve safety, since 2005, some sections of the route have been treated with a non-slip coating that increases traction for both hooves and running shoes. As a result, bulls slip less often, and the runs are now faster than they were a few decades ago.

Although it often appears chaotic, the running of the bulls is the result of a complex interaction between speed, perception, reaction, and group behavior. Understanding these processes helps improve the safety of both runners and animals, turning each run into an extraordinary example of science in motion.
