In anticipation of the total solar eclipse that will take place on August 12, the University of Navarra Science Museum has organized an inclusive science outreach event with the goal of making this astronomical event accessible to everyone, with a special focus on those who are unable to travel or who have accessibility needs.

The event will take place on August 12, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the headquarters of ASPACE Navarra (Camino de Galar, No. 11, Cizur Menor).

During the two-hour event, attendees will be able to follow the progress of the eclipse alongside Ignacio López-Goñi and Luis Casado—science communicators specializing in science outreach and inclusion—who will provide live commentary on the different phases of the phenomenon.

The program has been designed so that the experience can be enjoyed through different senses and will feature numerous accessible resources. Among these is a sound installation depicting the eclipse, which will allow visitors to hear its progression in real time, as well as the distribution of certified sunglasses for safe observation of the Sun.

The exhibition also includes a tactile exploration area, featuring models of the Sun, Earth, and Moon to help visitors understand their shape and scale; relief diagrams showing the alignment of the three celestial bodies during the eclipse; and a tactile representation of the path of totality on a map, which will help visitors geographically locate the phenomenon’s path. To ensure cognitive and communicative accessibility, materials will be provided in easy-to-read formats and with pictograms, as well as sign language interpretation—provided by ASORNA—and individual induction loops and headphones available on request. Similarly, to accommodate people with limited mobility, reserved parking spaces will be available upon prior registration.

In addition to viewing the eclipse from the event site, you can also watch a live broadcast of the eclipse captured from a weather balloon, offering a unique perspective on the phenomenon.

This event is organized by the University of Navarra Science Museum in collaboration with the Caja Navarra Foundation, ASPACE Navarra, the IDDEAS Foundation, the ONCE branch in Navarra, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT)—Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities—and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
