The Faculty of Science of the University of Navarra has brought together 1,200 schoolchildren -from 4th ESO to 2nd year of high school- around the activities of Science Week. The students, accompanied by their teachers, were able to enjoy informative sessions on science, as well as experimental workshops, which took place from November 11 to 15 in the Science Building of the University of Navarra.
In total, 1.200 attendees from nineteen schools in Navarra, La Rioja, Alava, Madrid, Soria and Burgos: IES Julio Caro Baroja, Colegio Luis Amigó, FEC Vedruna, IES Berriozar, International School of Navarra, Colegio Irabia-Izaga, Colegio Liceo Monjardín, IES Padre Moret-Irubide, Colegio San Cernin, IES Ibaialde, IES Barañain, Colegio Notre Dame, Colegio Hijas de Jesús, Colegio Carmelitas Sagrado Corazón (Vitoria), Colegio Marianistas (Logroño), Colegio El Prado (Madrid), Colegio Maristas San José (Logroño), IES Castilla (Soria) and Colegio Sagrados Corazones (Miranda de Ebro).
Participants were able to enjoy informative sessions on different branches of science: "You really are what genetics wants you to be!", "The human being in nature", "The hidden world of insects", "Artificial intelligence in science" and "Drugs: would you let your brain deteriorate before its time?".
The Faculty of Science has also organized informative scientific workshops adapted to the ESO and Bachillerato syllabus: biology -methods and tools for the study of wildlife; geology -demonstration and explanation of the properties and curiosities of different types of rocks and minerals-; microbiology -the microorganisms that surround us-, insects -characteristics of these small animals-; chemistry -thermosensitive and photosensitive materials, fluorescence and phosphorescence-; genetics -use of STR sequences for genetic profiling used in forensic science-; physics -use of STR sequences for genetic profiling used in forensic science-; genetics -use of STR sequences for genetic profiling used in forensic science-; physics -functioning of RFID and FNC cards that we use in everyday life such as in cars, garbage containers, university access, access to hotel rooms, etc.
On the other hand, on Saturday, November 16, more than sixty students from the 1st and 2nd years of high school participated in the Open Doors and Science Experimentation Day, a day organized for students interested in the degrees of Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Environmental Sciences, as well as the double degrees of Biology+Environmental Sciences and Chemistry+Biochemistry. The participants carried out practical laboratory work on microbiology, genetics and waste management while their companions received information about the academic offer of the Faculty, the Internship and Employment Service, scholarships and accommodation.
And on Tuesday, November 19, sixty students from five schools in the region will participate in "Forensic Science", a project promoted by the Forensic Science School in collaboration with the National Police, the Faculty of Science and the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra, in which they will carry out a police investigation on the recreation of a crime.
Science and biodiversity, a cycle for all audiences
On the other hand, more than 190 people attended the series of conferences on "Science and Biodiversity" organized by the Science Museum of the University of Navarra (November 12, 14 and 15), which dealt with topics such as insects, urban biodiversity and biomimicry.
In addition, the Museum also organized last Thursday 14th a dinner with science at the restaurant El Colegio, where 64 diners enjoyed an evening with good food, humor and live experiments, with the participation of Ignacio López-Goñi, director of the Science Museum, the chef Álex Múgica, and professors and doctoral students from the Faculty of Science of the University of Navarra.
The Science and Technology Week is an event in which the University of Navarra participates every year with the aim of bringing science closer to the general public. In this year's edition have collaborated the Caja Navarra Foundation, Acunsa-Clínica University of Navarra Health Insurance, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) / Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Civivox and Campus Home.
