A course to learn how to observe, understand, and depict nature through drawing and illustration. Nine hands-on sessions in which science and art come together to explore flora, fauna, and the landscape from a different perspective.
Throughout the sessions, participants will work on various drawing and illustration techniques to depict the shapes, structures, textures, and colors of flora, fauna, and the landscape. The course combines scientific observation with artistic creation, developing both artistic skills and observational abilities.

WHO IS IT FOR?
The course is open to anyone interested in nature and illustration. No prior experience in drawing or painting is required. The sessions are designed to provide hands-on learning and experimentation, and are adapted to different skill levels.
MATERIALS
A DIN A4 sketchbook with a minimum weight of 200 g/m² and a fine-grained surface (preferably without rings). We recommend the following: Canson Graduate Aquarelle. Other materials will be specified for each session.
Introduction to anatomy. We’ll refresh our perspective by focusing on one of the organs essential to this process. The human eye will serve as our model for understanding its function, and we’ll conclude the session by drawing our own eyes using a mirror.

We will begin by directly observing various vegetables—beets, radishes, onions, and artichokes—which we will dissect to study and depict their shapes and internal structures.

We will draw whole and cut-open pumpkins to observe and depict their different parts: skin, flesh, and seeds. If time permits, we will do the same exercise with walnuts.

Using examples of various styles, we will explore different ways of depicting the same subject drawn from life. In addition to watercolor, we will use other materials that allow us to experiment with mixed media and discover new ways of working.

Using various examples and suggestions, and drawing inspiration from real landscapes, plants, and insects, we will create an imagined, inhabited space filled with vegetation. We will experiment with stenciling and printing using everyday materials.

Concha Martínez Pasamar
She balances her work in the Department of Philology at the University of Navarra with her creative work as an author and illustrator. She has written and illustrated more than twenty books in which nature and the environment play a prominent role. In addition, she teaches nature drawing workshops in which she combines an analytical perspective with an intimate and emotional one.

An artist with a long career in drawing and painting and experience teaching children and adults. Her work seeks to connect with the artisanal and provide the tools necessary to develop ideas through artistic practice. She describes herself as a restless artist, constantly learning and engaged in creative exploration.

Lorea Larraya Medina
She is a member of the ArtCinco team, a drawing and painting school in Pamplona. She has illustrated psychology books and created murals at literary festivals such as Brif Braf Bruf. In her most recent works, she has focused on science communication and the visual representation of the natural world—both as it is known and as it is imagined.
