The Science Museum of the University of Navarra joins the Pamplona Biomarathon with a school and family activity on its campus

The Science Museum of the University of Navarra joins once again the Biomarathon 2023 -organized by the Terrabiota association-which this year will be held from April 28th to May 1st. During these four days citizens will be able to take photographs or record audio recordings of the living beings of Pamplona and its metropolitan area, and upload them to the iNaturalist platform, where the observations of the participants will be recorded and can be identified until May 7.
To contribute to this citizen science project, the Science Museum has organized an activity for schools and another for families. On Friday, April 28, the schools and institutes of Navarra will be able to discover, accompanied by their teachers and advised by experts from the University of Navarra, the fauna and flora of the university campus. They will also be able to enjoy, starting at 12 noon, a census of aquatic fauna in the Sadar River as it passes by the University. In order to participate in these activities, prior registration is required by e-mail at museociencias@unav.es.
One day later, on Saturday 29th from 10 am, families will be free to go around the campus identifying the species they find on their way. On the esplanade of the Ismael Sánchez Bella building of the University of Navarra there will be an information point where some animals can be observed with a magnifying glass, and where some professors of the Faculty of Sciences will give advice on species identification, make a botanical tour and inform about the different sampling methods used in animal and plant diversity such as nets, sheets, traps for insects and micromammals, among others.
Also that same Saturday morning there will be a scientific bird banding activity to learn about some species of the campus and how to take the body measurements of birds and other data for their study.
"From the Science Museum our goal is to participate in this type of activities that promote environmental education and have a scientific learning component. Our campus is perfect for this activity because we have both requirements: our university researchers and a natural environment with a great variety of flora and fauna," says Marie-Anne Reynell, development director of the Science Museum of the University of Navarra.

The Biomarathon (City Nature Challenge) is a citizen science activity -promoted by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural Science Museum of Los Angeles County- in which 400 cities from more than 40 countries are participating. The global presentation of the results will take place on May 8.
