The Schools of Science and Economics and Business Administration of the University of Navarra have organized a free online course to raise awareness among the general public about the importance of caring for the natural environment. Under the title "Understanding the Environment", the course also aims to highlight the interaction of human beings with their environment.

"There is a fundamental need for people to conceive the environment as a pillar of sustainability, and for this they must know the ecosystems and the challenges that affect them. With this course we intend to contribute to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable society from an environmental, economic and social perspective," says Enrique Baquero, professor at the Faculty of Science.

This course addresses eight landscapes - arid, tropical, Atlantic, Mediterranean, urban, alpine, coastal and fluvial - from different perspectives, to give students the tools to interpret the environment that surrounds us, and increase awareness of the need to care for it. "In the presentation of the landscapes, the student is led to see the relationship between people and the environment, also mentioning some problems or situations that allow us to understand the interaction between nature and human beings," adds Baquero.

The course, which lasts approximately 75 hours, will start in October and will be available during the current academic year. The methodology consists of watching videos of the different landscapes, and interaction in each of these scenarios through complementary material to finish with a self-evaluation. "This training is aimed at all audiences, without requiring prior training in science. It can be taken on demand, whenever you want, thanks to the online methodology," concludes Baquero.

The course is part of the University of Navarra 's sustainability plan, and in the future it is intended to undertake new courses to address the social, environmental and economic challenges present in society.
